Does deodorant make men more confident?

llow @bakadesuyo Human body odour is important in modulating self-perception and interactions between individuals. Artificial fragrances have been used for thousands of years to manipulate personal odour, but the nature and extent of influences on person perception are relatively unexplored. Here we test the effects of a double-blind manipulation of personal odour on self-confidence and behaviour. We gave to male participants either an aerosol spray containing a formulation of fragrance and antimicrobial agents or an otherwise identical spray that lacked…

Who is more willing to terminate a life threatening pregnancy: men or women?

llow @bakadesuyo Abortion is a controversial topic in society, and as such, has not been thoroughly explored from different theoretical perspectives. Across two studies, we investigated abortion decisions under varied conditions. Participants read hypothetical scenarios, deciding whether to terminate a life-threatening pregnancy in different circumstances. Men were more likely than women to terminate a life-threatening pregnancy. Participants were less likely to terminate the pregnancy when they could not have future children. Other individual difference variables also influenced participants’ abortion decisions.…

If your neighbor gets a new car, do you buy a new car?

ch week, the Dutch Postcode Lottery (PCL) randomly selects a postal code, and distributes cash and a new BMW to lottery participants in that code. We study the effects of these shocks on lottery winners and their neighbors. Consistent with the life-cycle hypothesis, the effects on winners’ consumption are largely confined to cars and other durables. Consistent with the theory of in-kind transfers, the vast majority of BMW winners liquidate their BMWs. We do, however, detect substantial social effects of…

IV estimates based on data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and County Business Patterns indicate that individuals living in a county with greater access to sports facilities are more likely to participate in physical activity and also report higher life satisfaction. The contribution of participation in physical activity to increased happiness is three times the size of the loss in happiness…

Does marriage really make people happier?

. Good marriages make people happier. Bad marriages make people miserable. Sounds obvious but our culture is very pro-marriage: One of the most common findings in contemporary empirical social science is that being married is associated with higher measured levels of happiness, or life satisfaction. The result seems to be consistent across both countries and time, and is apparently robust to statistical method, including with respect to econometric specification and fixed effects modeling. Our contribution is to propose that quality…

Does college football affect who gets elected President of the United States? How about the Final Four?

lcome to the horrors of democracy, part 3: According to what criteria do citizens make political decisions, and what do these criteria say about democratic competence? An impressive body of evidence suggests that voters competently evaluate diagnostic information such as macroeconomic trends and their personal financial circumstances to reward good performance while ridding themselves of leaders who are corrupt, incompetent, or ineffective. However, what if some voters’ personal emotional reactions to events completely unrelated to public affairs influence their voting…
